bio

Sports Medicine Practice:
Jimmy has been involved in high performance sports medicine since 1995 and has assisted many high level athletes ranging from swimming, running, soccer, paddling, surfing, tennis, rugby and cricket to motocross, badminton and squash.   The Discovery Sharks Peak Performance and Medical Centre and the medical care programme that is provided there is the result of many years of work and experience in the field of sports medicine and is rated one of the best in the rugby world.

The Centre for Sports Medicine Umhlanga (CSMU) and the Sharks Academy Medical Centre are also both world class facilities and provides a high level sports medicine and rehabilitation programme to sporting individuals as well as the public in general.  Within these two facilities Jimmy is assisted by an experienced and passionate team of Biokineticists:  Dennis Jackson and  Lynette Roberts, both at the CSMU, and Nicky Irvine (seasoned paddler and multi-Duzi finisher) , Tracey Calverley and Stephanie Elson at The Sharks Academy Medical Centre (located inside the Kings Park Virgin Active).  These two practices have one central focus area:   “The reduction of exercise related injuries in the exercising population and the effective rehabilitation of injuries in active individuals”.  This goal is achieved through a multi-disciplinary team that includes physiotherapists and sports physicians and other specialists that forms part of their sports medicine referral network.

Their approach to injuries is fourfold:
1.   To help prevent the athlete’s first injury;
2.   Once an injury’s happened, to recognize the different injury types and their causative factors;
3.   To identify an injured body part’s incorrect, activity specific patterns as it relates to anatomical structure and function;
4.   To provide an activity programme that  aims at correcting abnormal patterns and to restore/optimize function.

The practice prides itself in providing a service that is cutting edge.  It is achieving this by making sure that all practitioners attend workshops, conferences and courses in the field of sports medicine and physical rehabilitation.
